Can you play Marathon on a Mac?
Short answer: No. Marathon uses BattlEye's Windows kernel driver, and Bungie has not enabled it for Wine-based layers like Grapple.
What we know
Steam's store page for Marathon discloses "Uses Kernel Level Anti-Cheat: BattlEye — Requires manual removal after game uninstall". BattlEye describes itself as a kernel-based protection system.
Grapple is built on Wine, which runs Windows programs in user space without a Windows kernel. A kernel-mode anti-cheat driver has nothing to load into, and no Grapple setting changes that — only the game's publisher can.
BattlEye can be enabled for Proton, but only by the game's developer. Bungie's position on its other PC game, Destiny 2, is that Proton is not supported and that bypassing the block can get you banned — so don't go looking for workarounds here either.
GamingOnLinux's BattlEye list records Marathon as broken on Linux. Steam lists it for Windows only, with DirectX 12.

What to do instead
There are no Grapple settings that get around a kernel-level anti-cheat block, and we won't suggest workarounds that could get your account banned. If the publisher offers cloud streaming, that runs on a Mac; otherwise it needs a Windows PC.

Why doesn't Marathon work with Grapple?
Marathon relies on BattlEye, which uses a kernel-mode driver on Windows. Grapple is built on Wine, which runs Windows programs in user space without a Windows kernel, so that driver can't load — and the publisher doesn't allow Wine-based layers. The same applies to CrossOver and other Wine-based tools. Only the game's developer can change that.
Will a future Grapple update make Marathon work?
Not by itself. Anti-cheat blocks like this are decided by the publisher, not by compatibility tools. If the publisher changes its policy, we'll re-test and update this page.
Is there a Mac version of Marathon?
Steam lists Marathon for Windows only. There is no Mac version.
